Annual Department Report - 2019

Tibetan Children’s Village School Selakui, Dheradun Science Department Annual Report

This year science department activity journey had embarked with the five days intensive workshop in March 2019 from 11th to 15th on Basics in Nutrition by Dr. Bianca Maria from Switzerland at Tibetan SOS Private Industrial Training Institute, Selaqui, Dehradun.
A total of twenty students, ten from each of class tenth and twelve had participated along with our school accountant Mrs. Kunsang Dolma, home mothers, hostel matrons and biology teacher Miss Sherab Wangmo.

Secondly, as every year we do, this time we were able to allow twenty students of the class tenth to participate in the 3 days Navdanya program from 19th till 21st April 2019 along with two science teacher Miss Sherab Wangmo and Miss Pema Dolker as an escort teacher.
The selection of the students was based completely on the Interview organized by the Science team. The workshop had been experiential-based joyful learning for all of the participants. Three days of the workshop covered so many significant learning related to agriculture. That workshop had been eye-opening for many of us.

Like last year we had carried the Master Chef Program for class 6th students, especially initiated by our school science teacher Mr. Tenzin Jamyang last year with the aim of making the students have some hands-on learning. This year, miss Pema Dolker continued the same for class sixth students executed on the 3rd and 6th of July. This program was carried for two days at the Tibetan ITI Industrial Teaching Institute which is situated on the same campus as our school.

On June 19, 2019, seven girls with each exhibit from our school left to participate in the Third CTA level science exhibition at TCV Suja with our school science teacher Miss Pema Dolker. In Suja TCV, they presented their exhibits for two days for guests and local area schools. On their final day, they were taken to visit the nearby monasteries and Bir paragliding spots as an excursion.

In the CTA level exhibits competition, out of our 7 exhibits, 4 were selected to place before CBSE for selection to take part in 46th JNNSMEE-2019 (Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Mathematics, Environmental Exhibition).

Fortunately, unlike only one last year, this time CBSE has chosen our 3 exhibits out of 4 to participate in 46th JNNSMEE 2019. Therefore, six of our class 12 girls along with Miss Tenzin Woeser as an escort teacher left to participate in 46th JNNSMEE 2019 exhibition which took place in Raipur, Chattisgarh from 15th October to 21st October 2019 and on the last day, all the participants were taken for an excursion around in Chattisgarh. On return from the exhibition, these participants had presented their exhibits via video clip and talked about their wonderful projects on the Selakui TCV annual science day. Moreover, they also motivated the other students by sharing how meaningful these learning had been for them and advised them to try to grab opportunities like this in the future.

The last event that we managed for this year was our school annual science day which happened on 25th October 2019. It was a massive success. We had kept the theme “The Science for Sustainable Development” and we had many guests from outside too. Additionally, we were able to arrange two days of students' project exhibitions in a very organized way. The movie ‘October Sky’ was screened on the Science day evening and it was observed that all the students enjoyed it thoroughly.

Capacity Building Workshop on Teaching of Science July 21, 2019

Two days capacity building workshop on teaching and learning of science was conducted by CBSE on 19 and 20 July 2019 at The Sapience School, Vikas Nagar, Dehradun. Three of our science teachers Mrs. Choezin Lhamo, Ms. Pema Dolker, and Mr. Tenzin Jamyang attended the workshop. The objective of carrying out such program was to equip and enhance teachers with basic teaching and learning skills in science. The resource person for the workshop was Mrs. Deepti Sharma, (MSc. MEd., MCA), the principal of Pragyan Public School, Jewar. There were around 50 participants from different schools in the Doon valley. The first day was dedicated to understanding the objectives of teaching and learning sciences at the secondary level in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-2005) and creating effective lesson plans based on Bloom’s taxonomy and Howard Gardener’s multiple intelligence. The participants were then grouped to carry out a series of activities in collaboration. The activities were for effective communication, word search, learner-centered instructions, and drafting a common lesson plan involving all the important parameters for effective learning. Handouts were also provided to aid in discussion and writing the lesson plan. On the second day, Mrs. Deepti presented on different means and methods to assess and evaluate student’s progress. The groups were involved in identifying questions as good or bad for proper evaluation and assessment of student-centered learning be it on marking scheme or based on the overall learning outcome. The use of graphic organizers and its various types were introduced with sample formats in the assessment and evaluation. The session concluded with each group presenting their final teaching practices after careful discussion and deliberation of the two days of learning. Our science teachers were refreshed after attending the workshop. Mr. Tenzin Jamyang expressed, “it was all about learning, unlearning, and relearning. I am excited and looking forward to taking the next class after this”. They appreciated and thanked the CBSE board for coming up with such initiatives and the school leaders in providing such rare opportunity which will go far in the sound all round development of the nation builders, the effect of which will be reciprocated in our students.

Following is a report submitted by the escort teacher –Miss. Sherab Wangmo.

45th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science, Mathematics And Environment Exhibition For Children (JNNSMEE) - 2018

NCERT organizes JNNSMEE for the children every year for popularizing science, mathematics and environmental education amongst children, teachers and the public in general. The best part about the exhibition for the participants was that they get the chance to show, explain and talk about their projects to others. Moreover, it’s rewarding for fellow students, parents, teachers and community members to have an opportunity to see and to appreciate because science exhibition offers judging, students are motivated to strive for excellence and understand what works well in their projects and they can improve.

This is 45th JNNSMEE exhibition and it took place at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad, Gujarat dated from 23rd - 27th November 2018. The five days exhibition was followed by an excursion day where all the participants were taken to visit the Statue of Unity.

Besides the exhibition, they have arranged some very inspiring and motivating lecture by prominent guest speakers on some of the morning sessions. For instance, Prof. Anil Gupta from IIM spoke on the subject "Innovation and Creativity" and Shri. Kartikey V. Sarabhai, Head Center for Environment Education, Ahmedabad talked about the crucial topic "Environment Security".

Concluding my report here, I am very thankful to CTA as well as our school administration for giving me the opportunity to participate in the 45th JNNSMEE as an escort teacher. Being myself a science teacher, it had definitely been very experiential and informative on a personal level. It also had broadened my understanding of science, mathematics and environment on an another level.
